Book of the Dead of Aaner, priest of Mut

During the 21th Dynasty, the number of formulas on the Book of the Dead is often reduced in favour of an enrichment of the decorative elements. As one can observe on this specimen, the vignettes take over and extend on a large part of the papyrus surface. In this period, the custom also spreads to put in the tomb another funerary book, like the Book of the Amduat, formerly a royal prerogative.
