Middle coffin of Mentuirdis

The set of coffins of Mentuirdis, another “Cultivator of Lotus Flowers in the Temple of Amon”, but a member of a different family, is the most complete example among the group of coffins Schiaparelli found in the tomb reused by Khaemwaset. It includes the box of the outer coffin and both elements of the middle and inner coffins. It thus offers an overview of the main decorative themes and schemes of the period. On the floor board of the outer coffin is an elaborate representation of the “Goddess of the Sycamore”. Further down is a large image of the god Ptah-Sokar-Osiris along with the goddess Maat, both of whom are encircled by a large serpent. The decoration of the lid of the middle coffin follows the “single column” arrangement, while the inner one bears a “vignettes” decoration. The decoration of the inner coffin is dominated by an image of the goddess of the West (lid) and of the djed-pillar (box), an Osirian symbol expressing the rebirth of the deceased.
