Head of a royal statue (Ptolemy II ?)

In the absence of inscriptions, only style can help us to identify and date this fragment. Hellenistic pharaohs had themselves depicted both in Greek-style portraits of marble or metal and in classical Egyptian-style statues sculpted in the traditional rocks of pharaonic sculpture. The Egyptian-style portraits of the first Ptolemies are inspired by the statues of the last century of the Late Period. They are characterized by a smooth surface, elongated eyes placed high up on the face, horizontal eyebrows, an elongated face, full cheeks, and a hint of a smile.
