Lock with lion head

Lock with lion head. The lion’s head is rendered in great detail. The mane frames the head. Beneath the chin is a ring composed of three bands, into which a broken metal fragment is inserted, probably part of a chain. The left side of the lock bears an inscription: the surface on this side appears reddish, while the inscribed band retains the original bronze colour. The interior of the object is hollow. On the right side, at the rear, a nail is visible. The object was probably mounted in the doorpost of a temple’s door: protruding outwards, it allowed the door to be closed, remaining adjacent to the inner side and leaving the inscribed part visible. The object is made in the lost-wax technique for hollow casts.
