The Egyptian temple is a representation of the cosmos. Columns in the shape of papyrus plants graced its courtyards and halls, where they connected the fertile land of Egypt, symbolized by the base of the walls, to the sky, represented by the ceiling. In the Graeco-Roman period, a rich floral decoration was added to capitals to evoke the teeming life along the banks of the Nile.
