From the New Kingdom onward, a particular image of the god Amon was adopted, the “criosphinx”, that is, a sphinx whose human head is replaced by the head of a ram, the animal form of Amon. A large series of sandstone criosphinxes can still be seen today in Karnak, in front of the First Pylon of the great Amon temple and along the processional way leading from the Tenth Pylon to the temple of Mut on the south side of the site.
