A raptor mummy in the shape of the animal. The mummy has coarse bandages, impregnated with a dark, resinous substance. Several bandages are broken off and reveal portions of the bird beneath. The feathers are darkened with the same substance that discolours the linen bandages. This mummy is very unusual in that a choker of cylindrical blue faience beads adorns its neck. The beads are not uniform in size or colour. It is possible that a dealer added the choker to increase the artefact’s value.
The CT scan reveals that the mummy is an adult kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). The bird’s legs are stretched along the belly. Probably it was eviscerated, although there is evidence of brain residue and of soft tissues in the peritoneal area.
