Ibis mummy

An ibis mummy wrapped to show the animal lying on its back with the beak resting on its ventral side and the legs drawn up to the body as if it were seated. Most probably it was originally wrapped like most of the others from this excavation. The ibis was wrapped in a herringbone with insets pattern. As part of the final wrappings, a dark brown bandage covered the head and beak, but this is largely gone, revealing the bandages below. These are kept in place by a doubled-up thread. The rest of the ibis is wrapped with overlapping folded bandages. A single piece of fabric covers the base and is darkened with embalming agents. CT scans show a complete skeleton of an adult ibis positioned on its back, with the head folded over the sternum, wings folded against the sides of the body, neck curved to S and legs pushed up toward the body. Its neck is supported by a rolled piece of cloth, and several layers of the same fabric are wound around it. The bird was probably eviscerated.
