Ibis mummy

An ibis mummy wrapped to show the animal lying on its back with the beak resting on its ventral side and the legs drawn up to the body as if it were seated. Bandages, both vertical and horizontal/spiral cover the inner part and the side of the bird. The final wrappings on the breast side of the bird create a herringbone pattern with insets, reminiscent of folded wings. It is made by alternating strips of textile, secured by dabs of resinous material, that create a polychrome pattern. Fragments of the same dark textile cover the beak. A piece of linen covers the flat base and was secured by adhesives. CT scans show a complete skeleton of a juvenile ibis positioned on its back, with the head folded over the sternum, wings folded against the sides of the body, neck curved in a S, its legs flexed and pushed in toward the body. The bird is well preserved.
