This type of rectangular coffin apparently began to spread in Egypt from the mid-5th Dynasty onward, gradually replacing the shorter “palace façade” type. In these coffins, which are precursors of the type that was to become widespread in the Middle Kingdom, the deceased is usually laid almost completely stretched out on his or her left side.
The present coffin contained the mummified body of a woman with her grave goods: tunics and cloths, a headrest, a fragmentary box, a vase, and a mirror (S. 14396/a, S. 14396/b, S. 14396/c, S. 14396/d, S. 14397).
