This basin must have been used to present liquid offerings to an important individual named Mereru. Along the edge runs an inscription with an offering formula (hetep-di-nysut): “An offering that the king gives and Anubis gives… : a burial in the necropolis and a divine offering for the overseer of the storeroom Mereru.” Thus, the king and Anubis, lord of the necropolis, jointly grant the deceased his burial place and access to offerings from the temple.
