Ibis mummy

An ibis mummy wrapped to show the animal lying on its back with the beak resting on its ventral side and the legs drawn up to the body as if it were seated. The bandages have worn through at the head and opening shows the skull. This in turn has a hole in it, revealing the cranial cavity, empty except for some debris, which might include small fragments of brain. The body is decorated in a herringbone pattern with inset going from the beak down, with six overlapping bandages from the same fabric. The bandages are covered by a resinous material that does not allow to identify the original dyes. The dorsal side might once have been covered by another piece of cloth, but lower layers are now exposed. A generous amount of oil, resin, or a combination of the two has run from the back of the head down the neck and onto the body. CT scans show the complete skeleton of an adult ibis positioned on its back, with the head folded over the sternum, wings folded against the sides of the body, neck curved, and legs flexed in a seated position. The body contains the crop and gizzard, complete with traces of food.
