These canes, carefully made and often bearing inscriptions or decorations, are not simply walking sticks but a sign of authority. This type, with one decorated extremity and the other sheathed in bronze, is typical of the New Kingdom. The names inscribed on two of them - Neferhebef and Khaemwaset – and the titles associated with them, “director of works,” show them to be gifts of Kha’s colleagues, in recognition of his role.
