To master the craft of writing, it was necessary to learn the calligraphy of hieroglyphs and hieratic (cursive hieroglyphs). Beginner scribes first copied and recopied single signs, sometimes using a grid, then entire lists of words, and later increasingly complex formulas. This ostracon (pottery fragment) shows three names of people, written in hieratic, beginning with the name of the god Ptah.
